What your body is trying to tell you
I stubbed my pinkie toe about 5 times over the span of a couple weeks until I finally broke it. As it healed, I also began stubbing my other pinkie toe. Was this a coincidence? No. What was happening was my body was trying to create balance in a specific area of my body and I was not paying attention to the signs.
In energy work, there is an understanding that energy flows as needed and that the body draws in energy to the places that will benefit from it. Because a physical imbalance has energetic roots and connections throughout the entire bodymind, no matter what the imbalance is, a complete session ensures that you are working at all levels of imbalance rather than just the superficial physical symptoms.
What is interesting is that in many cases, the physical symptoms can be a guide to show you what other aspects of your bodymind are ready to be balanced.
These concepts have been fleshed out based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. Meridians are energetic pathways that run through the body. Each meridian is connected with an element, emotion as well as organ and other concordances. When there is an imbalance in a bodypart, you can look to the meridian, element and organ for more information.
Below is a list of bodyparts and concepts that we may be struggling with in our beliefs.
For example, if you are struggling with something connected to your belly button, you may have some beliefs, memories or emotions connected to your family of origin and nurturing self.
Another way you can look at the messages your body is trying to pass along is by seeing what meridian connects with the area.
For example, the gall bladder meridian runs through each pinkie toe. This meridian is associated with the element wood and the emotion of anger as well as planning and making decisions. In my case, if I just focused on my pinkie toe with my sessions, I would be missing the root cause which is connected with my gall bladder, liver and runs through my body where beliefs around decisions are stored.
From a physical perspective, my gall bladder on a physical level could be feeling a little overwhelmed if my liver is not functioning properly.
On an energetic level, there could be some anger that needs to be released or some decisions that I really need to make. Here is a guide with the organs and their associated emotions and connections.
So, how can you use this information?
- If your bodymind is balanced and not presenting any physical imbalances, you can spend time each day with a focus on a specific area of your body.
- During your time, hold space for the energy of the area. Let’s say you want to work with your gall bladder. You would set the intention that you allow this area to be balance. You are open to releasing any stored anger and embracing clarity around the decisions you need to make.
- Keep in mind that you will want to include this as a part of a complete session. Although the Liver and Gall Bladder tend to store the emotion anger, if they are overwhelmed, the anger will be stored elsewhere.
The complete sessions as I mentioned ensure that you are addressing all of the connections to the imbalance.
The other way you can use these guides are if you are feeling a specific way. Perhaps you find there is a lot of stored anger. Your Liver and Gall Bladder are connected with the emotion anger. Spending some time focusing on those organs or the meridians connected with those organs can help to create shifts.
Hopefully you are seeing how emotions and beliefs are intertwined with your physical being.
I am still performing my sessions and meditations each day, with a focus on my gall bladder, releasing any anger that is ready to go and creating plans so that my toes remain intact ;).
