What Your Body is Trying to Tell You

I stubbed my pinkie toe about 5 times over the span of a couple weeks until I finally broke it. As it healed, I also began stubbing my other pinkie toe. Was this a coincidence? No. What was happening was my body was trying to create balance in a specific area of my body and I was not paying attention to the signs.
In energy work, there is an understanding that energy flows as needed and that the body draws in energy to the places that will benefit from it. Because a physical imbalance has energetic roots and connections throughout the entire bodymind, no matter what the imbalance is, working with the entire energetic body ensures that you are working at all levels of imbalance rather than just the superficial physical symptoms in one area.
What is interesting, is that in many cases, the physical symptoms can be a guide to show you what other aspects of your bodymind are ready to be balanced.
These concepts have been fleshed out based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. Meridians are energetic pathways that run through the body. Each meridian is connected with an element, emotion as well as organ and other concordances. When there is an imbalance in a bodypart, you can look to the meridian, element and organ for more information.
Below is a list of bodyparts and concepts that we may be struggling with in our beliefs.
For example, if you are struggling with something physically connected to your belly button, you may have some beliefs, memories or emotions connected to your family of origin and nurturing self. Or if, you are having issues with your shoulders, are you taking on too much responsibility in your life?
Another way you can look at the messages your body is trying to pass along is by seeing what meridian connects with the area.
For example, the gall bladder meridian runs through each pinkie toe. This meridian is associated with the element wood and the emotion of anger as well as planning and making decisions. In my case, if I just focused on my pinkie toe with my sessions and meditations, I would be missing the root cause of the imbalance which is connected with my gall bladder, liver and energy that runs through my body where beliefs around decisions are stored.
From a physical perspective, my gall bladder could be feeling a little overwhelmed if my liver is not functioning properly.
On an energetic level, there could be some anger that needs to be released or some decisions that I really need to make. Here is a guide with the organs and their associated emotions and connections.

Another way imbalances can manifest from an energetic level to a physical level is through our chakra energy. Chakras are major energy centers in the body that run along the spine from your tailbone up to the top of your skull. It is thought that these 7 major chakras develop as you grow, and events, beliefs and disruptions in your energy can impact their development and ability to allow your energy to flow.
Each chakra is connected with organs and endocrine glands, as well as characteristics. When a chakra is imbalances, it can affect those corresponding organs, endocrine glands and ways of being.

For example, if you struggle with finances, you could have an imbalance in your root chakra. If you find people don’t listen to you when you speak, you could have an imbalance in your throat chakra. If you have difficulty making the best choices and don’t feel connected to your intuition, you could have a third-eye chakra imbalance.
On a physical level, if you struggle with digestive issues, you could have an imbalance in your solar plexus chakra. If you find you have a hard time staying focused and thinking clearly, there could be a crown chakra imbalance. Everything is connected.

So, how can you use this information?
- If you have a specific part of your body that is imbalanced, look at the corresponding chakra, meridian and consciousness of the specific area.
- Then, you can perform a meditation or energy session focusing on the area. During your time, hold space for the energy of the area. Let’s say you want to work with your gall bladder. You would set the intention that you allow this area to be balanced. You are open to releasing any stored anger and embracing clarity around the decisions you need to make.
- Another simple, but powerful way to create energetic and physical balance is with essential oils. Each oil has a very specific resonance and will adapt to your body’s energy to create balance for you. For example, if you struggle in your relationships, and find yourself physically and energetically drained, Oregano and Tea Tree can free you from toxic relationships and help you to strengthen your energetic boundaries.
- If, on the other hand, your bodymind is balanced and not presenting any physical imbalances, you can spend time each day with a focus on a specific area of your body, such as your chakras to uplevel your energy and life.
The other way you can use these guides are if you are feeling a specific way. Perhaps you find there is a lot of stored anger. Your Liver and Gall Bladder are connected with the emotion anger. Spending some time focusing on those organs or the meridians connected with those organs can help to create shifts.
Hopefully you are seeing how emotions and beliefs are intertwined with your physical being.
The wonderful thing is, you CAN shift your energy and your body without needing a broken toe to remind you. Just make sure you listen to what your body is trying to tell you.
I hope you found this helpful.
In warmth,
Lisa

You missed our body’s largest organ: the skin! What concepts/emotions are those linked to?
Hi Stacey – the skin can be connected with boundaries, protection and sense of self 🙂
Thanks Lisa, for the information and insights, sorry to hear that your toes are suffering to help you gain it.
Sending you lots of love & light!
