How to Use Essential Oils with Reiki

Why incorporate essential oils into your Reiki practice?

One of the amazing things about Reiki is that it although it can stand on its own, it works seamlessly with other modalities, like aromatherapy. There are over 17,000 medical studies to date on the effectiveness of essential oils – let’s make the most of them!

Anchoring a place of healing

You already know how clients love the way they feel during and after their Reiki sessions. But essential oils can help enhance that experience. Ask your client if you can use oil during your session to help them to anchor their good feelings. Whenever they smell that oil again, it can take them back to that place of healing!

Accessing deeper levels of awareness

Perhaps you want to help your client access a deeper level of awareness. You can use Frankincense and Sandalwood, which have been used for centuries as a part of meditation and spiritual practices. The parts of your brain that sense smell are located within your emotional brain. This means that essential oils can have a significant impact on memories and emotions, and take your sessions to a deeper place.

Working on a physical level

We love that Reiki works on a lasting energetic level first which then filters through the physical level. You can address physical imbalances immediately with essential oils while Reiki is working at the energetic level.

Add a product to your service based business

Would you like to earn an income during the time you’re not performing Reiki sessions? Adding essential oils to your business can be a way to diversify your income with a residual income stream. With essential oils, your business can generate income even while you are on vacation or asleep!

How can you incorporate essential oils into YOUR Reiki practice? There are many ways!

  • diffuse an essential oil during a session for yourself or your client (with client’s permission and confirmation that there are no contraindications).
  • create an essential oil wellness plan for your clients (including specific oils and how they will be used each day)
  • teach classes about essential oils and their many benefits
  • add a drop of essential oil to hand lotion for your hands before you perform your session (with client’s permission)

Essential oils can be an essential part of your life and your Reiki practice. But when you choose to use them, it’s important to know how they work and how to use them safely.

As a teacher, I use to combine smells, cinnamon, etc., with teaching segments and study sessions. Students chose their own favorite scents which they would smell while we studied the information. During assessments, students were allowed to access these scents – with responsibility – to enhance successful outcomes of the examination. While this was never incorporated into any official curriculum, I conducted this side practice making sure no one would be affected by any smells/scents (hence, having students provide from home).

    Hi Lisa,

I’m excited to see you working on this. I’m very much interested in learning about the spiritual properties of essential oils, how they can assist us in expanding our consciousness and healing energetically in addition to their physical actions.

  9. MS KIM GRADY on July 10, 2018 at 6:11 pm

    Hi Lisa
I have been using essential oils in the ways you describe for some time, now. I find that there is a powerful anchoring during grounding before I set to work. They are extremely useful to set a Client at ease and they somehow help to “pave the way” for a connectedness at a deeper level, which only enhances the experience for the Client. Of course, it is essential to ask the Client’s permission prior to the use of any essential oil and I feel that a thorough working knowledge of the oils and safe work with them is of course, vital.

I am glad that you have shared your knowledge and views of working with essential oils in this way. My top 2 questions would be these:

    1. When working with a patient with a cancer diagnosis, is it necessary to take one of the accredited courses on cancer massage?

    2. Which particular essential oils might be considered for use with animals? (I use catnip spray when I am treating my elderly cat, plus crystals placed, but I know that she is particularly fond of this).

    Warmth returned,

    Kim Grady.

What a great idea. I use incense during my sessions, but the essential oil on the hands is a neat kick. I have a few clients coming in today. I will give it a try and see how it works

  15. Stephanie Cimmarusti on July 12, 2018 at 11:58 pm

I am doing this backwards πŸ™‚ I’ve been an aromatherapist, herbalist & energy worker for years & am just now incorporating Reiki in to my practice. Glad to see you like the idea of mixing modalities. It works very powerfully for me & my customers.

  16. Corey Strouse, CA on July 13, 2018 at 1:25 am

I am also a certified aromatherapist, and love using essential oils in my reiki practice. However, essential oil safety is paramount when using oils with clients. Complete client health histories, understanding essential oil side effects and which oils should never be used on clients with certain medical conditions, never using any essential oil without the client’s expressed permission, etc. Essential oils are potent and powerful, and can have amazing benefits when safely combined with reiki. I am looking forward to your new course.

  17. Louise Hancocks on July 13, 2018 at 9:04 pm

I am very interested in aromatherapy and have been experimenting with a couple of oils for a few years. I can’t live without lavender oil to help me sleep. Oils for relaxation also for meditation as I struggle to switch off I find a nice aroma helps me breathe deeply. A pain relief oil may be beneficial. And something to connect with the Angels. Would be interested in anything to do with essential oils. Thanks Lisa ?

Thanks so much for your feedback Louise πŸ™‚ I really like the Deep Blue blend for pain but Copaiba can be really nice. I also make a blend with Frankincense, Lavender and Peppermint for my back πŸ™‚

I’m new to the Reiki course but I’ve always been intrigued, never realising that I could be a conduit to healing energy. I have always loved essential oils but have a minimal understanding of their uses so I’m excited to here more in regard to this.

  22. Sonal Bhola on July 17, 2018 at 6:53 am

    Thanks Lisa.
    My two questions are :
    1. what are the most common EOs.
    2. Good brands apart from DoTerra

    • lisapowers on August 10, 2018 at 10:39 pm

Hi Sonal – the most common are usually Lavender, Peppermint, Lemon, Oregano, Tea Tree, Frankincense, Thyme, Orange, Grapefruit. I honestly have not come across another company that does the amount of testing to ensure purity and sources the oils in regions the plants are natively found for potency other than doTERRA. I did do a lot of research over the span of a few years once I realized how different oils were from brand to brand.

  23. Clare Merritt on July 18, 2018 at 2:08 am

This is great to see Lisa! I have been using Essential oils in healing and massage for the past 4 years and could not be without them. I am just starting my reiki journey to compliment my oils πŸ™‚ using them for grounding, spiritual and mental awareness is very effective.
Look forward to more from you about your experience.

  25. Kelly on July 22, 2018 at 7:34 pm

Hello Lisa! I have been using essential oils for years and am excited to see how to incorporate them with Reiki – it seems a very natural synergy. It would be so helpful to have a quick printable general reference guide that lists needs/issues (i.e. calming, insight, openness, peace, etc.) and the oils that can serve those, and visa versa, the oils listed with the purposes they can serve (it would be so helpful to have both). Also, there are so many oils out there and sourcing is so important. I hope you’ll share your favorites. Thank you for doing this! I’m very excited!

    In Warmth, Kelly

    • lisapowers on August 10, 2018 at 10:34 pm

Hi Kelly – I agree that the oils can be so powerful for our energy and emotions. I just posted an article with a list of essential oils and emotions you might find helpful (Space Clearing). I agree – sourcing is crucial. Potency and purity vary greatly and it is so important to choose a high quality oil πŸ™‚ I do have favorites for sure πŸ™‚

  26. Catherine on July 25, 2018 at 12:32 pm

Thank you. I am a counselor in Naturopathy and have incorporated Reiki into my sessions for severe stress clients. I use essential oils with the clients permission and alternate between Frankinsence, lavender and Bergamot depending on the client’s need. I do not touch clients during my Reiki sessions and only rub the oil on the palm of my hands. Sometimes I diffuse it in the air but only with clients I know well who I have discussed essential oils with during my Naturopathy sessions. I burn Palo Santo in between clients and diffuse palo santo oil once a month to clear the house.

  27. Brenda Kushwaha on July 30, 2018 at 5:15 pm

I already use them as aromatherapy but I would like to know if we can use them and where on their body during a session. I added my web page but I am in the middle of changing web servers. so it’s nowhere near complete. I own a store so I have a lot of work to do to get my website up and running.

    • lisapowers on August 10, 2018 at 10:31 pm

Thanks for your feedback Brenda πŸ™‚ I am working on a course to help with additional applications :). That is exciting about your business evolving πŸ™‚
